Biography of Blackpink
South Korean group Blackpink, formed in 2016 by label YG Entertainment, has literally redefined the codes of K-pop and conquered stages around the world. Comprising four members with diverse talents, Blackpink has quickly become an international phenomenon, combining pop, rap and explosive stage performances. The members of Blackpink are Lisa, Rosé, Jisoo and Jennie, all from different countries, bringing diversity and a unique dynamic to the group.
THE BAND MEMBERS
Jennie, the group's rapper, began her career as an intern at YG Entertainment. Spotted for her charisma and rap skills, she quickly became a key figure in Blackpink. Jisoo, the group's visual and vocal element, first made her mark appearing in commercials and music videos, before officially joining the group. Rosé, born in New Zealand, was spotted at an audition and, with her talent for vocals and guitar, quickly became one of the band's main voices. Finally, Lisa, originally from Thailand, is Blackpink's lead dancer, having impressed since her audition in 2010 by beating 3,000 other candidates to join YG Entertainment.
THE START OF A TRIUMPHANT CAREER
On August 8, 2016, Blackpink made their official debut with the album “Square One”, including the hits ‘Boombayah’ and “Whistle”. “Boombayah” is a huge success, with millions of views on YouTube within hours, propelling the all-girl band into the spotlight. Their launch is one of the most remarkable in the history of the YG Entertainment label. A month later, Blackpink released “Square Two”, and began performing live, notably on South Korean TV channels. Their popularity grows rapidly, and in November 2016, the band exports to Japan with a concert in Tokyo.
INTERNATIONAL CONQUEST
Blackpink's international consecration began in 2018, with their hit “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” reaching number 17 on the Official Trending Charts in the UK and receiving a similar reception in the US. That year also marked their collaboration with Dua Lipa on the track “Kiss and Make Up”. Blackpink became a must-have band on the global charts. In 2019, the four artists become the first K-pop group to perform at the legendary Coachella festival, a historic moment for the international K-pop scene.
In 2020, Lady Gaga invites Blackpink to participate in her album “Chromatica”, confirming their position as global stars. In 2022, their single “Pink Venom” breaks YouTube records, becoming the most viewed video in the group's history. That same year, the band released their second album “Born Pink”, featuring tracks like “Ready For Love”, and embarked on a world tour, the “Born Pink World Tour”, stopping off at prestigious venues such as Paris, Los Angeles and many others.
BLACKPINK BEYOND MUSIC
Blackpink isn't just a music group; they're also true icons of fashion and social commitment. They have been the face of brands such as Louis Vuitton, Puma and Adidas. What's more, their influence extends far beyond catwalks and concert stages. As of 2018, they are beginning to get involved in social causes, including making donations to help South Korean families in need and supporting musicians in difficulty during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Blackpink members also became ambassadors for COP26, highlighting the challenges of climate change. The group has also been associated with popular video game campaigns, such as PUBG Mobile and Animal Crossing, reinforcing their presence in a variety of fields.
CONSTANT POPULARITY
In 2023, after years of continuous success, Jisoo went solo with her album “ME”, marking the blossoming of each member beyond the group. Blackpink remains one of the world's most popular female groups, their concert tickets selling out in record time thanks to the immense loyalty of their fans. The band continues to prove that their influence extends beyond the boundaries of music, and their world tour and concerts continue to attract the attention of millions of people worldwide.
